I am a newbie to this forum.

I have a set of silver tableware which I believe to be from Holland. It comprises 6 settings of: large knives, small knives, fish knives, large forks, small forks, fish forks, soup spoons, desert spoons, teaspoons, cake forks, plus various serving spoons.

The hallmark is shown below:

An additional photo can be seen at:

I would like to know a) the year and origin of this silver;

Many thanks

Review the forum gudielines that forbid questions relating to appraisal or assistance for sale.

You silver is in fact Dutch (lion passant walking right), probably 1923, as indicated by the date letter, "N" in the crest and style of that year. The key mark next to the lion was in use from 1853 to 1953. 830 is the silver content in part per thousand. The duty mark to the right of the lion is a perseus head. The M struck on it inidcates the assay office and probably where it was made. Unfortunately, I don't have a letter guide to the seventeen assay offices. Possibly Maastricht. The HH is a maker's mark, but I can't help you there either. Good luck,
Tom

scham and tmockait:

When I saw this post, I looked at the section in Tardy on marks of the Netherlands, and perused the date letters as well. tmockait, you say what is shown above is the date letter for 1923. The date letter for that year is indeed an "N" in a circle, but it's much more straight-up-and-down, and uniform in thickness. I was leaning more toward 1948, when an "N" is used which seems to lean rightward somewhat, and features thin up-and-down strokes joined by a thick diagonal, much more like the "N" shown above.

IJP and Scham,

I thought about 1948, but eliminated it because that year the N had a crown over it indicating the change of monarch. On second thought, however, I realize the crowned N was only in use after July or so, hence IJP is probably right.

The 'M' is for the Schoonhoven Assay Office.
The maker's mark 'HH' was H. Hooykaas listed at Gravenhage from 1913-1947 and at Schoonhoven 1924-1943.
The crown was optional for the 1948 year mark of 'N'.
See 'Maker's Marks of Dutch Gold & Silversmiths 1814-1963.' ISBN 90 12 05247 5.
Trust this helps.

For the record (since, after all, today is Queen's Day in the Netherlands ): the crowned N for 1948 was used after July 1 of that year in honor of the coronation of Queen Juliana. The N was uncrowned from January 1 to June 30, crowned from July 1 to Dec 31.

Firstly, my apologies for asking about evaluation on this Forum . However, can someone posibly tell me whether such silver was mass-produced?

Secondly, many thanks for all your advice. I am truly amazed at the incredible expertise out there.
