I would appreciate help in IDing a mark on a ladle I recently purchased. Engraved 1877, I believe it is Norwegian sterling, but could be all wrong. In the event that my photo doesn't show, it is marked "G.(two spaces) A.Abrahamsen" in a box. "13 1/4" in another box. Many thanks. Although I can't directly help, I'm interested in the outcome, having just bought a spoon by the same maker. This one is about 9" long, with a stamped shell to the end of the stem, "pricked" initials, and is marked "ABRAHAMSEN" also "GA" and with the "12L" punch indicating .750 standard. The term 'Norwegian sterling' is a misnomer, and your spoon punchmark for 13 1/4 lot (loth) indicates the standard of metal to be .828. The style of my spoon seems to suggest a date c1820-1850, but I stand to be corrected. IP: Logged |

Thank you for the 13 1/4 information. Please excuse my stupidity, but does that mean you do think it is Norwegian in origin? My research only told me what it wasn't. I guessed at the origin, based on the fact that the owner was Norwegian, and had quite a few other items from Norway. Thanks, again. penelope IP: Logged |

No stupidity - we're both groping in the dark a little. I think they're Scandinavian in origin, and though they don't bear official Norwegian assay/city marks, I haven't discounted that possibility yet. Like you, I'm hoping someone else will recognise the maker and origin. IP: Logged |
