I purchased this from an estate sale yesterday. Does anyone know what it is? It looks like a pipe. It does have hallmarks too. IP: Logged |

I am not sure about the correct term in English, but it is called a pipe holder: it is used to put a white clay pipe in it. The pipe is thus protected from damage on travels. They come in wood, ivory,... and yes sometimes they were made in silver. Like cigarette cases they were items to show off! Most of them are 19th century, although the eldest are 17th cent. hope this helps IP: Logged |

Thank you for your help. I guess it is missing a pipe to go inside? IP: Logged |

they more or less have standard sizes: it is possible to find clay pipes that fit, you should search for pipes in the region the holder was made (cfr. hallmarks) IP: Logged |

I do not see a way of getting a clay pipe to fit inside unless the object is hinged or has a connection between the stem and the bowl. Is there a hinge or does it come apart? IP: Logged |

It's hard to tell from your photo, but the marks appear to be Swedish dating to 1882. IP: Logged |
