These are the base and marks on a small silver bowl, diameter about 4"/10cms. I've had it for a couple of years, and have seen one other like it. They appear to be spun, and in each case have some decorative bright cut engraving around the rim. The marks are an absolute mystery to me. It has been suggested that the "St Eves" mark may identify a pattern of hollow ware, and that the incuse 'A' may be a workman's mark. The punch mark to the left of the group of three resembles the head of a woman in profile. Can anyone throw any light on these?

Believe every piece I've seen marked STG.SIL. was from Australia or New Zealand. Don't run across too much of it here in the U.S., but have found Aussie silver notoriously hard to research. Would love to see your piece, would you be able to post a picture? Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |

This bowl (and the other) were found in Australia, but the marks are not known there to my knowledge. They don't appear in any Aust. printed references. Will post a photo when I'm capable - and thanks to Scott for taking the above shots. Here is the complete item:

A circular gilt lined bowl by St Eves was exhibited in the Kozminsky Bicentennial Exhibition Australian Silver, Gold & Jewellery held in Melbourne, Australia in 1988. The bowl appears as item #13in the catalogue with the following..'Little is known about this maker" The catalogue is ISBN-0-947292-00-4 I am researching marks on Australian silver made during the last 50 years and have made the assumption that St Eves was before the timeframe of my research.
