In the antique trade these are usually called "Ribbon Pullers " or "Ribbon Threaders ". This example appears from the "800" mark to be Continental silver of 800/1000 purity as oppossed to thwe 925/1000 of Sterling. I've heard some date back to the 18th century but have never seen such. Personally I'm not entirely convinced if the original purpose was entirely ribbon or sewing related but have never seen another rational explanation. In case the practise is unfamiliar to some readers, in England, when they asked awkward questions, little children used to be told that babies were brought by the stork about sex. Now the parents learn more from the kids ! IP: Logged |

The crown & crescent mark preceding the "800" quality mark indicate German manufacture, post-1888. The mark to the right of "800," which appears to be a sickle, is the maker's mark. IP: Logged |

I once saw one of these advertised as an umbilical cord clamp! I believe they were used to pull a ribbon through a baby's bonnet or, alternately, to pull a ribbon through a lace handkerchief to turn it into a bonnet. This seems to me the likeliest purpose; the stork and the newborn make sense only in the context of some sort of infant's paraphernalia. And the sickle mark is that of the manufacturer J. D. Schleissner Sohne of Hanau, Germany. IP: Logged |

I was thinking it had something to do with an umbilical cord or something a doctor used but I never did think of it as a ribbon or eyelet threader. And from Germany to boot!!! I thank you guys for the fast and informative information. A pleasure coming here indeed. pbanz IP: Logged |
