I was given years ago six of these little spoons and told that they were "Dutch and old." Now I'm more curious smile and am hoping someone on this forum can help. The spoons are just 3 5/8" and very light gauge silver.

Thanks for any info!

It is Dutch, and I can make out the year letter "L" for 1845. The other marks (left to right) are the maker, the fineness (here, the 2nd standard of .833) and the assay office guaranty mark (there should be a letter on the helmet which identifies the assay office and therefore, generally, the city of manufacture.) A more detailed photo might enable our members (or me, once I get back home!) to tell you more.

Hope this helps!

I have a couple of Dutch pieces and have found that the letter on the helmut is quickly and easily effaced (not sure why, not a vey deep punch?). Your marks look worn, so don't be surprised if you cannot find the letter on the helmet.

Sometimes you can find the maker, flatware makers are pretty well known. Can you decipher the makers mark?

Thanks to each of you very much for your helpful information! I chose the spoon with the clearest (least worn) marks to scan, which was done at quite high resolution; so I'm afraid I can't get anything clearer--would BIGGER help?

Maybe if you only take the mark on the left (makers mark) it could be clearer, or could you discribe it?

Sorry to take so long to respond, raf, but I was out of town (at Winterthur, actually!). Here's a photo of the maker's mark which seems a good deal clearer--hope it will help.

Thanks!

Sorry, can't make anything out of it, any chance of posting it a little bit bigger? Or can you make out the letter cipher combination? If it reads 'V / 23', than the maker is Adrianus Verroen Jr. from Schoonhoven, but this is really a wild guess I'm afraid

I'm sorry. I really can't make out any letters in this makers mark. Probably to rubbed. As my list of Dutch makers is alphabetical and has no index, I'm afraid I can't help. Sorry to put you to all that trouble!
