[26-0666] I would be very pleased if someone could help me identify a pair of forks I recently acquired. Each has the following four marks, they are extremely tiny and can not be photographed, or in one case even identified. One mark is straightforward and is "900" in an oblong box. One mark has four letters in a square box. One mark has a triangular shape and a "9" shaped object, both hanging from what looks like a tree branch, in an irregular heart shaped frame. The last mark is what looks like a tower (Blackpool or Paris) beside which is a beach umbrella, above which are two tiny animals, and above them is what looks like a crown. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forums. If you cannot photograph the marks, try making a drawing. Without an illustration, any attempt at identification is only guesswork. IP: Logged |

The only thing for sure is that they are not American. I'm waiting for someone to tell you what they are without seeing an image. But the problem with verbal description is that what you see is not what other people see. What you see as a beach umbrella could be an architect's T-square to someone else (I'm just making this up...I have no idea what the mark is). IP: Logged |

Very many thanks for your help in listing my very bad drawings. I notice that I said they were on forks, but they are actually on large desert spoons, about 8 inches long, with cut or cast floral decoration, with an empty cartouche. IP: Logged |

Hmm, 900 may be the purity indicator for the silver (as in 900 pieces of silver per 1000). Waylander IP: Logged |

Thank you everyone who has tried to help. So the marks are not recognised. Perhaps they are all bogus and the items are not silver at all? IP: Logged |

Sorry to have missed this, but, well, I've been busy. The marks are first quarter 20th century Spanish. The tower, crown, umbrella & animals (these latter actually a bridge & wolves) constitute the civic arms of Bilbao, Pais Vasco, Spain. "900" is the silver purity (90%) and the triangular shaped object is the maker's mark: the letter A and a flag in a heart - that of the Alfredo Alvares Co. The other mark - ROOS - is known but not identified; it is perhaps a retailer's mark. Hope this helps! [This message has been edited by blakstone (edited 09-24-2005).] IP: Logged |

GREAT. Many thanks, Blakstone. That makes a lot of sense as I live in Menorca and bought them at a car boot sale about a year ago. IP: Logged |
