Jeff Herman received this question and forwarded it to us. Twosoandso@aol.com writes: Is there anyone researching & compiling info on this subject? Last great source was C. Forbes. I knew a gentleman @ Essex Institute but lost contact. I am particularly curious about English characters w/ letters inscribed backwards. Can't find any published information on these makers, but feel certain that these have a Chinese connection. Any suggestions? IP: Logged |

What I don't know about this stuff would fill a book (several, in fact). However, I know from recent experience that there are marks of silversmiths working in Canton and in Calcutta, India, that closely resemble English marks. Some of the Indian and Chinese pieces, unless they have the Chinese character marks as well, could easily pass for unknown British provincial makers. You might find out what books are out there through Amazon. IP: Logged |
