This silver mark is on my art deco tea set and I am at a loss as to the maker. I have searched every book I could find on silver marks (including the ones at the San Francisco Library) to no avail. Thanks, Jerry B

I do not recognize the maker's mark - it is a bit outside my area -- but I believe the crescent & crown is the German purity assurance mark instituted in 1883. IP: Logged |

Yes, this is a German mark, post 1883. The 925 is the silver standard; most German silver is 800 or 900, whereas your piece is up to the full sterling standard. Sorry, but I can't help with the maker, either. His initials are probably HW, as signified by the maker's mark. Unfortunately, 20th century European silver marks, unless they are from an important designer, are not well documented in English-language references. IP: Logged |

Since I posted the query, my email address has changed to jdbtf@aol.com. The earthlink email address is no longer valid. Jerry B IP: Logged |
