I have an old soup ladle. It has a plain fiddle shape handle which is tipped on the back. It weighs 8 oz. on a postal scale. It also has a very fancy script monogram. It has two marks. One mark looks like a five-leafed clover (without the stem) with a sovereign's head in it. The other mark is an oval with the G.K. in it. I don't know what kind of silver it is, but I suspect it is silverplate. Can anyone identify the mark? IP: Logged |

Hi there, If you look closely at the first mark, can you tell if it is a woman, facing right? Also, is there a small "3" just to the left of the head? If there is, your ladle is Austrian silver, 800 standard, made between 1866 and 1922. If not, please describe the details of the mark as best you can. A magnifier should help! Brent IP: Logged |

It has long hair - probably a woman - and is facing right. The crown on top of the hair looks like a crescent moon on its side. To the left of the nape there appears to be a "7". To the right of the lips there is what appears to be a "4". Even with strong magnigication it is difficult to make the numbers out unless a very bright light hits the mark in just the right way. Both marks and the background around them have a very rough finish, kind of stippled - not sure of the proper term. Hope this helps. Also, the initials are "GK" not "G.K." IP: Logged |

And... I found the mark in my dusty old Wyler, p. 381, column 4 near the bottom of the page - mark #7866. Wyler attributes this to Vienna since 1872. This is definitely the mark - receding chin and big nose. I also found other info (not in Wyler) on Austrian silver standards: Austria (click here) discussing a letter in the mark which indicates the seat of the assay office. Since Wyler's drawing doesn't show a letter, I'm wondering what letter(s) would indicate Vienna. IP: Logged |

And... Perhaps the head represents Emperor Franz Josef (Francis Joseph)? (click here) Same nose and chin. IP: Logged |
