[01-0389] Hi: I need help identifying a German silver flatware mark. I recently bought a set of 800 flatware and would like to upload the pics; however, I cannot do so because my pic is not in .jpg form. Each piece bears the crown and crescent Reichsmark, and the knife blades are are Henckels (clearly marked). Please write if you think that you can help so that I can e-mail you a pic of the maker's mark itself. I would also like to subscribe to this forum. How do I do this? Thanks! IP: Logged |

It looks like the mark of Koch & Bergfeld, of Bremen. They were founded in 1829, and made silver at least until well into the 20th century. I do not know if they are still in business. Brent IP: Logged |

May I ask you both what reference book you use for German, and other Continental, makers. Regards, Willie IP: Logged |

I imagine that Brent and I used the same book. Identifying European makers is a little hit or miss. When travelling overseas, most of the dealers over there don't seem to know or care about the numerous lesser makers. I used the Art Nouveau Art Deco Silver book by Krekel-Aalberse. It's listed on this site's book list. For the traditional standard patterns like your beaded flatware, the maker doesn't make much difference except for precise pattern matching. IP: Logged |

Thanks Martine. Silly me, I have a copy of that book and had not thought to look there. Willie IP: Logged |
