Karin Coulter TheLilLdy@ writes: I am looking to complete a set of silver I have. Can you tell me if you know what type of silver (maker or name) the piece attached to this email is? There is a picture of a blacksmith on the knife and below the picture it reads "Solingen Rostfrei". Thank you for your help! Karin Coulter P.S. If anyone knows what type this is perhaps you might be able to tell me where I might be able to complete my set. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

Solingen is a city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen). Solingen has been famous for cutlery for centuries. It was never a part of East Germany. Rostfrei = rust free = possibly stainless steel. The handle on the knife could be silver plated (does it tarnish?). Ernst Pack & Sons of Solingen used a trademark showing Siegfried (a folk hero of early and medieval Germanic mythology) with a hammer. You might try contacting the company, they are still in business. Ernst Pack und Söhne IP: Logged |

Pack und Söhne would be the maker of the knife blade only and as such unpromising as a source of information. Karin needs to look for marks on the handle of the knife and the spoons and forks. A detailed description of those and a good deal of luck might lead us somewhere. IP: Logged |

Mail to packsoehne@ was rejected, ... MAILBOX NOT FOUND ... USER UNKNOWN. Karin did not respond. But on a more positive note -- There are a number of cutlery manufacturers in Solingen who put out complete lines of flatware. I just don't know if Pack is one of them. Do you Arg(um)entum -- or anyone? IP: Logged |

I don't know anything for certain but as you well know many, if not most, flatware manufacturers buy their blades from a specialist firm. Also a search on Pack returns nothing but entries on bayonets, daggers and the like. So, back to what I said, if Karin wants an answer she'll have to find marks on the other pieces. IP: Logged |
