Hope some one can help with this Russian piece. I can read the Russian mark and date it at 1908-17. But(there always is a but) the mark of a crescent moon with three stars and makers mark of W.H. is not in my book. Any Russian experts out there. Thanks so much Terry IP: Logged |

H.W.in an oval is the mark of Henrik Emanuel Wigström, the chiefgolsmith of Faberge´, but should be together with the Faberge´mark. In my opinion this is very dubious and one should see a foto of the piece. I have seen many fakes "hallmarked" with great names. Sazikov2000 IP: Logged |

The mark is perfectly genuine, though it has nothing to do with Fabergé. The little squiggle behind the kokoshnik head is the Greek letter iota: the distinguishing mark for the Warsaw assay office, which was under Russian jurisdiction from 1851 to 1915 (when Germany seized Poland from Russia). "W.H." (not "H.W.") was Wladislaw Hempel. He (along with Stefan Hempel) was one of the Bracia Hempel [Hempel Brothers], whose "cresent moon and three stars" trademark also appears here. They were prolific early 20th century Warsaw silver manufacturers. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
