I have an old cigarette case, clearly marked Elde Alpacca, the word "Elde" is elegantly inscribed in script lettering while the ALPACCA is a plain font in all caps... both sides of the case are beautifully tooled/stamped with flowers (roses and thistle); the front of the case proudly displays an even more beautifully carved crest or insignia that is wonderful colored enamel on silver with the word WEISBADEN in the middle of the crest. I know alpacca is an alloy mixture with little or no silver and is sometimes referred to as German silver but could anyone comment on when it may have been made, its significance or value? It appears that Elde was or is a jeweler in Germany. I have seen the mark (on the web) on other jewelry being sold in Germany. Weisbaden is a town in Germany. Perhaps that is a good place to start the search for Elde. Could the "crest" be the town coat-of-arms? [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 05-10-2003).] IP: Logged |
