circa 1930-1942, a beautiful genre of silverware was created in Indonesia incorporating local motifs with European tableware. I have read reviews of the booklet "yogya silver", about an exhibition of these silver items, but am unable to access it. The first time I wrote to the library in a museum in the Netherlands inquiring about an oval pierced heavily oxidated dish marked 800 HST, I received some info, and was told to write back the next month when the curator would be back. When Can anyone help identify the names of these silversmiths or ateliers? I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance.

The Yogya silver book by Kal identifies only about 30 silversmith's marks by name. HST is not one of them, but the SS DE LUXE mark is identified to Sastro Sarjono, still active. The book is really quite nice, and I was able to get copies reasonably priced through the internet (gave one as a gift as well as the one for myself). Given your evident interest I'd really recommend it. IP: Logged |

Dear fwg, Thanks so much for your reply. I believe the book I mentioned, which was published in Holland about an exhibition of Dutch colonial silver, is different from the book by kal you wrote about. HST is mentioned there, while SS DE LUX (my piece is lacking the last E) is not. However, I feel pretty sure the maker is sastro sarjono, as you said. I will try to find a copy of the book you recommend. mark 77 IP: Logged |
