[26-0858] Hi I posted this before but have finally got the photo's sorted thanks to the help of the members of this forum, Much appreciated! This is the original post, any help would be gratefully received I have just found this website and think it is excellent and since their are clearly a great number of people with superb knowledge I would like to ask for assistance in finding a bit more about a pair of spoons I have. They are Lubeck silver, that much I know from the hallmarks, They are Hanoverian in styling with a raised back on the stem and a rounded rats tail (forgive me if m terminology is wrong) Hopefully someone will be able to tell me something from the makers mark which GI above and L contain in a Shield, so the makers mark is GIL, Any help would be very greatly appreciated as I have taken them to many so called experts who could no really help me Best wishes

I'm glad the suggestions about resizing helped. The rounded area on the back of the bowl is more properly called a drop, rather than a rattail (which is longer, generally tapered to a point, and runs a good length of the bowl). I presume you're attributing this to Lubeck (Germany) because the other mark is a double-headed eagle? We can't see that clearly enough in the photo, and there are a number of other places that used similar marks, so that may not be definitive. If you can get a close-up photo of the marks that might help (although some of our members can be pretty amazing working from partial views). Some people have found that taking a photo through a magnifying glass has worked well, if your camera doesn't have a macro function that will get you there. I haven't tried it, but have seen some taken that way that were successful. My gut feeling from what I can see is that it's continental, later 19th century, possibly even 20th. Might be earlier, but that's what looks most likely to me. Beyond that, I'd need to see the marks more clearly. IP: Logged |
