I wonder if anyone can help me with some silver marks on a patch box. The marks look like a mermaid and a key. Many thanks,

The "fishy" mark is a stylized (Rococo) dolphin, and was used in the Netherlands between 1859-1893 on all domestic (i.e. Dutch) items which had non-precious metal additions, heavily plated items (i.e. those whose total weight was at least 25 % precious metal) or on items which failed to meet minimum fineness of .833 at assay. These latter objects were, at the discretion of the manufacturer, either struck with this mark or destroyed. The key mark overstriking it is likewise Dutch, used 1853-1953, and which represented a restitution of 2/3 of the hallmarking duty granted for new items exported out of the Netherlands. So your item is Dutch, 2nd half, 19th Century, probably of low standard silver and made for export. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |
