[26-0871] I have not been able to find this mark anywhere. I've looked in Tardy's and have been unsuccessful. Can anyone identify this mark? This mark is on a handle of a silver basket. It looks like a bird with the numbers 11AP and G underneath it. One the left side of the square, there are the letters ox and on the right of the square there is I/O.

Welcome to the forum. Look more closely at the marks beneath the ostrich. Could they be WMF over G. The mark looks very similar to that of Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik Aktiengesellschaft, a German company that makes silver plate among other things. If my suspicion is correct that the piece is in fact plate, that would explain why you cannot find the marks in Tardy. A clearer picture would help. Good luck, IP: Logged |

WMF tends to be distinctive. A picture of the piece would help us enormously. Usually a mark alone is not enough to identify a maker. IP: Logged |

Indeed WMF. The mark should read like Tom stated. "The 'I/0' means 1 gr. of silver for 10cmx10cm. So it is silver plated, the 'OX' stands for 'oxidised', so the basket had some kind of patination on it, porbably it has or had an 'old silver' patination. IP: Logged |

Mheaton, Could we see a picture of the whole basket, which sounds very nice. I hope you don't feel bad that the piece turned out to be silver plate. A few purests (pun intented) might be down on silverplate, but most of us find it quite interesting. That is why the forum has a whole section devoted to it. Cheers, IP: Logged |
