Here is another 19C spoon from my mystery pile. This has an interesting engraved handle with grapes and a horseshoe. The spoon looks handwrought and it is fairly heavy. There are two marks. The one on the front of the handle is possibly a leaping horse with some kind of character/letter underneath it. The mark in the bowl is another character, and I don't know how it should be oriented. The marks look more middle-eastern than continental to me, and the silver work strikes me the same way. I couldn't find any exact mark matches in Tardy.

And here is another.
With the star and crescent mark it is a little more obvious. IP: Logged |

Now that I have looked in Tardy at the Turkish section, rather than try to match the mark to something in the pictorial mark index, I can tell the mark is obviously a character and not a "leaping horse" picture (No wonder the doctors get alarmed at my Rorschach test answers). Would the horseshoe have symbolized good luck? And the grapes? [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 02-06-2007).] IP: Logged |

Actually, I think it is both an Arabic inscription AND a leaping horse (or Pegasus) picture. That kind of calligraphic illustration is not uncommon (although I have never seen such in a silver mark, and am jealous!). A nice piece, and I think a bit older than the second (which is also nice). Your "leaping horse" (I see it too) is the Sultan's tughra, here's a link: Sultans of the Ottoman Empire [tughranet.f2s.com/tughras/tughras.htm - link gone from the Internet] Have fun trying to figure out which one is on your piece! Cheryl IP: Logged |

And here is another:
Both of these spoons have the ziz-zag assay scrape on the back. IP: Logged |

I profess near total ignorance on these, but if the orientation of the tourgha figure shown in Tardy is correct, then the photo of the mark on the first spoon is shown upside down, and it is no horse. And if so, then the figure in the third spoon would be read with the bowl down, and it looks very much like Tardy's. If the orientation of the mark on the first spoon is correct, then the one on the third spoon, read with the bowl up, could be a unicorn. I suspect Tardy is correct. Some time ago I had shown mine to an Egyptian colleague who can read Arabic, but he could not make heads nor tails of it in either position (pun intended, but he couldn't read it), so whatever a tourgha is, there may be no calligraphy in it, nor any horse or unicorn. Here's a thread in which we discussed Ottoman silver when I brought a spoon back from Bulgaria. Blackstone provided an excellent link to an online list to tughras. Each Sultan had his own. With a little patiance you can date the spoon pretty closely. Turkish or Bulgarian Tom IP: Logged |
