In 1999 I attended the Tuscon International Gem & Mineral Show. While 98% of the exhibitors sell gem stones, there are a few exhibitors in other specialties. One such dealer was a Russian who was selling Russian silver stirrup cups. All of the stirrup
cups were in the shape of animals. A couple were the entire body, while others were just the head as is the case with most English stirrup cups. The man explained that he and his wife also collected these cups. Apparently there is only one animal
made per year by the manufacturer. I can only remember the wolf, two different bears, and a boar, although there were more. All were magnificent. The workmanship was unsurpassed, The detail impeccable. But, to me, the wolf's head was breathtaking.

As they were rather expensive, I was a little hesitant to buy one on the spot for fear I would need my money for something else later in the week. However, upon enquiring about
ordering one from him later, he explained that anything unsold had to be returned to
Russia by law. There was some connection between the silver manufacturer and the government. I just can't seem to remember the details, if I ever knew them.

My addiction got the better of me after two days and I returned to purchase the
wolf's head. None of these pieces were small. Nothing like the English silver ones,
which typically hold about a shot or two. The wolf is about 4 1/2" tall and about 4" at the widest part.
It weighs nearly a kilo! The rim of the cup has a gilt finish.
(Sorry I can't post a photo now as it is packed and I am unable to get to it now -
once I am able to get it out, I will.)

Anyway, the reason for my story is that I am interested in knowing if anyone is
familiar with these stirrup cups and might know the manufacturer. I never did have the manufacturer's name - and as I remember the hallmark was diminutive. So small that it
was hard to see clearly even with a loupe and I don't remember seeing a makers mark.

I have Googled in all possible combinations, continue to watch on Ebay and check real auction catalogues but I have never seen another one of those cups anywhere.
I'd like to buy more if I could ever track them down again. Any help is appreciated.
Are you out there Sazikov2000?

Search google images with Russian Stirrup Cup, and a stirrup cup comes up on the first page. Once you get to the cup there's an interesting write up to go with it. Try using internet jumpstation which has a good list of search engines. Google is great, but myself, I like to continue to use other search engines as well. Google just doesn't have absolutely everything out there covered yet and probably never will.

I saw some of the best stirrup cups made by a Russian jeweler/silversmith living in the states. This was 8 or so years ago and I do not know his name or where I saw them. They were beautifully modeled, bear, boar, etc. The casting was excellent and the finish was also top job.
