Many Danish silversmiths from the early 20th century lack a significant following in the US, their work frequently being overshadowed by Georg Jensen. Two of the best are Mogens Ballin and Evald Nielsen.

Mogens Ballin (1871-1914) opened his smithy in Denmark in 1900. He produced beautiful, handmade silver jewelry and table wares. Georg Jensen worked in the Ballin shop from 1901 until 1904, when Jensen opened his own shop. The youth set shown below is handmade and decorated with a soft, planished finish and an applied, abstract beaded design. This pattern is similar in feel to Georg Jensen's "Beaded", and perhaps Jensen even contributed to this Ballin design. I think the functional end of the fork is beautiful with its short tines and inwardly tapering shape. The items are signed with the shop's conjoined "MB" mark, "BALLIN", and "826S". Some smaller pieces, like jewelry, lack the easily read BALLIN mark.

Does anybody have other early Danish silver/jewelry to share?

While I have a full appreciation of Georg Jensen designs, usually prefer pieces by lesser-known and less prolific makers. Grann & Laglye produced some wonderful Skonvirke pieces, here is a 1922 spoon with inset amber and my dragonfly caddy spoon, 1953 by Copenhagen maker Poul C. L. Frigast from my collection:

Sorry for the quality of pics and lack of marks, my laptop's down and just pulled these up from my web page.

Cheryl,

Thanks for posting those great pieces. The first piece reminds me of Evald Nielsen's work. The second piece is fabulous! Of course, I have a weakness for insects!

This is a brooch with an Evald Nielsen design:
