Here I am, brand new to the forums. I,ve checked for previous listing of my question and believe this is new...

Where can a person find a list of Russian silversmiths who held the Imperial warrant?

The reason for the question is a kovsh [at auction] bearing the mark MC (Sokolov or Semanova). The kovsh also carried the imperial warrant eagle. Apart from the fact that all the marks looked as though they were punched yesterday and the whole thing looked to be a forgery, I can find no reference to Sokolov or Semenova holding the royal warrant.
I thought knowing the warrant holders would be a first good step to indentifying forgeries.

Can anyone help?

The best book on Russian silversmiths is : M. M. Postnikova - Loseva. There you can find all Court Jewelers.

Just to name the most famous with the year when they were appointed to the honor of Court Jeweler:

Bolin,1850, Moscow and St. Petersburg

Bock, Moscow and St. Petersburg

Boianowski, St. Petersburg

Fabergé,1885, London, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Odessa, Kiew

Hahn,1890.St. Petersburg

Khlebnikov, 1881, Moscow, St. Petersburg

Kordes, 1840, St. Petersburg

Morosov, 1884, St. Petersburg

Ovtschinnikov, 1865, Moscow, St. Petersburg

Postnikov, 1877, Moscow

Sazikov, 1837, Moscow, St. Petersburg

Sokolov, St. Petersburg

Tilander, St. Petersburg

Verkhovtsev, 1871, St. Petersburg

Gubkin, 1855, Moscow

Gratschev, 1892, St.Petersburg

Semionova Maria was an excellent enamel artist, worked for many famous firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but was no Court Jeweler!

The Kovsh shown by Scott Martin´s foto is from Khlebnikov (see above), but "very contemporary" to express it mildly!

Many thanks gentlemen for your prompt replies. Yes, Scott Martin, exactly that sort of thing. It is a delighful thing though isn't it? The actual kovch that raised the question was equally delightful but allegedly by Semenova (complete with shaded cloisonne)
Many thanks sazikov2000 for your list of the most famous. I will certainly pursue the M. M. Postnikova - loseva.

Can I now ask another question, which may annoy many collectors - do these forgeries have a value in their own right?

Anything people find of interest, they tend to collect.

Forgeries are also collected. For example Tiffany buckles were and continue to be forged. People who are taken in by the forgery are being ripped off. People who know the buckets are forgeries and want them because they are forgeries find value.

As with anything, when there are two (or more) willing buyers and all buyers (bidders) are presented with the same truthful disclosure about the item(s), then the market will determine the value.
