[01-1835]

I recently bought a bird at an estate sale. He appears to be blackened silver. There are two sets of marks (one set on his neck and a duplicate set on his tail) that are: a crown, underneath the crown are the initials "GR" in a heart, and 800 off to the side.

Knowing almost nothing about silver I have been attempting to solve this mystery on the internet. So far the only info I have discovered is that the 800 stands for 800/1000 percent silver. Is this correct?

I would love to know who made it and where. It is a beautiful bird and amazing workmanship.

Sorry I cannot provide a picture....the marks are sooo small!

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me!

Is there a new moon to one side of the crown? If so your bird is German. 800 was a popular silver standard in Germany.
Even if the marks are too small, a picture of the whole piece would be fascinating.

Thank you so much for trying to help! I really appreciate it.

I have examined the bird again w/10 power loop and have discovered two more marks on the tail. One appears to be a square with a circle in it. The other one is totally illegible.

He appears to be a crow.

He is 10 inches tall and 10 inches long. He is hollow and the head can be removed. The wings are hinged so they can be posed up or down. He has glass eyes attached with pins.

I have fallen in love with him and named his Alfred for Alfred Hitchcock.

Any information you can give me will be much appreciated.

I FOUND IT! Neresheimer Hanau! One of the companies was Georg Roth & Company that used the mark of a crowned GR! They were making reproductions of old pieces in the late 1800s! Does anyone know anything more about them?

Also, there is some damage to the hinge on the wing and the end of one of the toes is broken off. I'm not sure if I should have it repaired or who should do it. I feel like I should not trust him to just anyone. What do you recommend?

Thank you for your time."

Georg Roth & Co. (Neresheimer was a different firm) was founded in Hanau, Germany in 1891 by Georg Roth & his wife, Katharina Welsch. They were manufacturers of large and small silver works of all kinds, but specialized in antique styles, as did most Hanau manufacturers. The last listing I have for them is 1926, but I expect they may have continued until at least WWII when, like many German companies, they went under. Judging by the large number of items which turn up with their marks (including their ubiquitous pseudo-ancien régime French marks, a cursive "P.", "A", and a fleur-de-lys, all crowned) they were apparently quite prolific.
