I recently came by this item and it's been a bit of a puzzle, but what I've come up with so far is that it's most likely German (only country to use 10 loth?) and in function is a holy water bucket. The putti lead me to believe it is most likely a liturgical object. It's marked with a 10 and what looks like a maker's mark of which I can only make out the letters SA, then it is stamped J.A.C. on the shank and on the inside of the collar (owner's stamp?). The bucket looks like higher quality silver and has rolled die decoration and is unmarked, as is the chain, which is also silver. Would appreciate any further input.

Vathek, The Austro-Hungarian (previously Austrain) empire also had a 10 Loth mark. The absence of any religious symbols makes me doubt that this object is liturgical. Good luck, IP: Logged |

tmockait: there was a reply in the New Members Forum (Answer German 10 Loth Holy Water Bucket?) which mentioned that JAC is short for the latin St. Jacobus, or James, which is a common name for churches in the Netherlands. Also I interpreted the faces as putti and the interior when I got it certainly had signs of the item being filled with water, so it still seems the most likely scenario until something more convincing comes along. Thanks for the reply too. IP: Logged |
