[26-1240] Good evening. I was wondering if anyone could help clue me in on identifying Irish silver. This is a lovely napkin ring that appears to be chased (pattern is pressed from backside. With the swaggs etc it looks Federal period and the flower device around the monogram area looks feminine. it is faintly engraved in script E. F. The hallmarks are somewhat readable. The first is GA impressed. Then part of what looks like a head looking left impressed in a square, then something that looks like the Irish harp (from my silver book) and then NS impressed. ( I am hoping this doesn't stand for nickle silver). I am wondering who made this, if it is Irish, if it is sterling and possible date period. Thanks to all. Hilda

I suspect the NS is for Nova Scotia. IP: Logged |

Well, in my opinion, going by decorative style alone, this piece is liable to be continental European circa 1900. The style is not very Canadian to me. Could the "GA" and "harp" possibly actually be a poorly struck "GAS"? If so, it could be the mark of Georg Anton Scheid of Austria. Scheid was a prolific Austrian maker, and I have seen him work in this style before. I haven't noted silverplated work by Scheid yet, but that doesn't mean there's no such thing. IP: Logged |

I think it might be GAB which stands for Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (Goldsmiths inc.) and was founded in Stockholm, Sweden 1867. The NS stands for 'Ny silver' which is same as Nickel Silver so a mixture of copper, zink and nickel. I would estimate that the napkin ring is from early 20th century. Regards, IP: Logged |

MacKay lists no worker with these initials in Nova Scotia. IP: Logged |

I second that: GAB, Stockholm, silver plate. IP: Logged |
