[26-1236] I am trying to post my first image. This is a test. The question is, who is the maker GLF on this Nuremburg Silver Salt and what is the real date? I found this makers mark in Wyler's The book of Old Silver pg 359 ref 4290. It is hard to tell based upon the town Mark Style for N, if this is c1700. IP: Logged |

The master GLF is Georg Leonh. Fern (Rosenberg No. 4290), he was registered as master in Nuremberg from 1726 on, other salts from this master are known. Your salt dates probably to between 1755-65. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Wow, I am speachless that you came up with a name. I have bought a shelf full of books including about 7 silver references and have scanned through everything I could find at 2 local libraries. What resource did you use and is it on the market for sale? I am just amazed and very thankful for the speedy and helpful reply. Hilda IP: Logged |

Marc Rosenberg: Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, Berlin 1928 (but available in a reprint)- is a compendium of 3 volumes of German marks, and 1 volume for the rest of the world(!). Rosenberg only wanted to take marks into his books, for which he found a silver piece, while the newer books on German marks compiled by Wolfgang Scheffler record all the silversmiths, but not necessarily all the marks, as found in registers etc. All these books are very expensive, for instance Scheffler's Goldschmiede Hessens goes for over $ 400.- So unless you are an avid collector of German silver, it might not be a good investment. I have not used my Wyler(so outdated) in a while and can't find it on the crammed library shelves here right now, but know that he reprinted the index of Rosenberg books, so whenever you find a mark there, you know where to find more details. A more appropriate book to buy right now would be Tardy: International Hallmarks on silver collected by (Tardy) - I think you can order it online. And in ending a warning not every piece which is marked with the old German "N", is an authentic 18th century piece, this "N" and many other German marks were used quite frequently on reproduction silver, made in Hanau in the 19th century. ------------------ IP: Logged |
