[26-1175] I have been given as a gift a pair of sugar tongs. The makers mark is CGE - which I believe is Carl Gustav Eqvist. The Year is 1850. The Town mark is unclear but probably Moscow. The assayist mark is PA with a dot between the letters. Can someone identify the assayist? Many thanks in advance IP: Logged |

Hello and welcome to the forum. I believe Carl Gustav Eqvist worked in St. Petersburg, not Moscow. We really need pictures of both the mark and the piece, both to help you and because all of us enjoy seeing the item. Also, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your interest in silver, beyond the tongs? Something we ask of every new member. Tom IP: Logged |

My interest in silver has only arisen because of this gift and I am interested in finding out as much as possible about it's origins. Who knows where that will lead too!! I have taken two photos of the tongs - one showing a general view and the other the crest on the end. At present,I am struggling to get acceptable photos of the marks as they are inside the curved end of the tongs. I will persevere but in the meantime thought I'd keep interest alive by posting the shots I have managed to take. IP: Logged |

The assay mark is in Cyrillic letters - the first letter is a bit like the Greek pi (but without the top bar extending beyond the two vertical) - the second letter looks like a Latin A or maybe a Greek capital delta. The town mark doesn't look anything like those of St Petersburg that I have seen (elsewhere online). As I said I will persevere and get some images of all the marks. Thanks for your suggestion FWG for using a telephoto. I'll try that. IP: Logged |

I have now taken reasonably legible photos of the hallmarks - frankly I doubt if is a possible for me to improve on these. IP: Logged |

The pattern is "Prince Albert" or "Albert". See these posts: IP: Logged |

a pretty international pattern then - UK, USA, Germany, Russia Of course the nobility of that period - especially the royals - were all inter-married. I might be pushing my luck here, but does anyone have any ideas about the crest? How might I go,about identifying it? IP: Logged |

The assayer seems to be P.Dmitriyev (1841-1851) which would fit to the year. The photo of the town mark is a little unclear but it seems to be the St.Petersburg town mark with crossed anchors and a scepter in a round shape. I happened to have a decorative plate by Carl Gustav Eqvist with similar marks (assayer different).
I didn't find the coat of arms of the noble family on its own but a similar one (with cross and half moon) is include in the coat of arms of noble families Mendeleyev and Ukhtomskiye (I don't know if the translation is exact as I tried to translate them letter by letter). This I understand means marriages between families. Hope this is helpful. Regards, IP: Logged |

Thanks Juhana The town mark is very indistinct even under a magnifying glass but I guess there is the sort of shape to it that looks like the town mark on your plate. But as both maker and assayer are St Petersburg based that is what it should be. I am persuing an alternative avenue on the arms also but your information will help narrow down that search. Again many thanks [This message has been edited by trevorg15 (edited 08-23-2006).] IP: Logged |
