Hello all, Here is a rather nondescript spoon with some marks that trouble me. The marks are an [84] flanked by two devices, apparently the same but struck in two directions. Because of the 84 I am leaning towards a Russian provincial attribution, but have been unable to pin it down. Any help? Brent IP: Logged |

Possibly Chinese? they sometimes just stuck on some number but if tested would probably be higher or lower. IP: Logged |

I have never seen anything that resembles this grouping of marks. The 84 makes me think Russian. The other marks are not at all familiar. If I use a little imagination about the other marks, they could be the German crescent moon crown. With a little more imagination there is something Chinese'ish going on. Perhaps made during the time of the Soviet army arrival in Germany? IP: Logged |

I can vaguely see it as a crude German silver mark using the one on the right to go by? On second thought, I don't have any good ideas. Even a crude German mark would be a mirror image. The Chinese suggestion seems to be the best one to me so far. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 06-04-2009).] IP: Logged |

Perhaps somewhere like Manchuria or Mongolia, disputed territories that changed hands at times? That situation could be akin to the one discussed elsewhere with 84 marks on Japanese-design pieces, which is also not really documented to my knowledge. IP: Logged |

Hello, Thank you all for your input. I like FWGs idea of a far-eastern origin, perhaps Chinese for a Russian market, or Manchurian. I did get it with a pair of Chinese export teas, so perhaps they were all from the same estate. Please let me know if anyone sees anything similar. I love a mystery@ Brent IP: Logged |
