Here is a solid silver dragon, Meiji period, with its maker's signature. This was given to the Newark Museum in 1941 as part of a large gift of Asian art... Any idea who the signature represents? It has just gone on exhibition in our Japanese galleries. IP: Logged |

I've been doing some research on this silver dragon with its rock-crystal ball. The signature says Koreyoshi, which I believe is Ishiguro Koreyoshi, who worked in Musashi province in Japan 1832-1887. The MFA Boston has several exquisite tsuba or sword guards by this artist--and it seems that like many artisans who worked for the samurai warrior market, Koreyoshi would have shifted his skills to making beautiful but non-weapon related objects after the Meiji rule began in 1868.
