[26-0918] I recently added a nice master salt to my small collection of silver. It has two hallmarks and some investigating makes me think it is made in Augsburg, but I do not know what period and also I do not recognize the Sickle mark. Is there anyone who can give me some advice on these marks? Many thanks

It is difficult to be sure without a picture of the object, but it looks like a pseudo hallmark by a Hanau firm. The sicle is the mark of the firm of Schleissner, which, like most Hanau makers, specialised in the making of "antique" silver. If you look for Hanau in the forum you will find more information. I don't think I've seen an Augsburg mark with the leaves at the bottom. This may be a Hanau 19c piece with psuedo hall mark. IP: Logged |

Absolutely correct. The sickle is the trademark of J. D. Schleissner in Hanau (founded 1816 and still on the market) and what looks like the town mark of Augsburg is a pseudo mark. Sazikov 2000 IP: Logged |

thanks for the fast response. I have added a photo of the salt and a detail. I have seen sickle marks from Schleissner but in a cartouche and not as deep struck as these ones. Almost all Hanau marks I have seen are struck not as deep. Again thanks for all information. IP: Logged |

it should be noted that some of these hanau pieces are quite nice as long as you know what you're buying. IP: Logged |

The overall design is a quick confirmation that it is one of the Hanau "instant antiques". This shows the usefulness of showing both closeups of the markings along with photos of the object itself. I rather like the overall design and impact of this one. IP: Logged |
