Just wondered if anyone knew the answer. Have a really nice s/p set made like birds sitting on flowered base. They are well made and probably silver plate. The birds are marked JAPAN and the base has some markings that are completely illegible.

Was the mark JAPAN for the country or a makers mark?

Any idea of age and or maker?

Starting in 1921, all items being imported into the U.S. were supposed to be marked with the name of the country of origin written in English. Prior to 1921 and going back to about 1890 the U.S. import laws only required things to be marked with the country of origin which means most Japanese exports of that era were marked Nippon. So, post 1921 imports are all supposed to be marked either Japan or Made in Japan.

There was a short while, after WW II when there was a variation and many things were marked "Occupied Japan" but that was not uniform and only lasted a few years before going back to Japan or Made in Japan.

TY Kimo...... by the way, that is not a flower on that birds head. The light picked up the holes for the salt or pepper.
