This is my first posting so please bear with me on this. I have a solid silver box some 7 ins. by 5 ins. and 6 ins. in height. The tardy book identifies it on page 74 as 1866 the other mark is the initials TD the T is clear the D could be a U (I think) Any ideas please. Thanks IP: Logged |

One of our members will point this out eventually, so I may as well chime in: We always request that new members tell a little about themselves, as an introduction—This is, after all, a close-knit community you are entering. Secondly, very few of our members like to hazard a guess without seeing an image of the item and its marks, so I would urge you to find a way to either photograph or scan the item and learn how to post photos. It's actually quite simple, and if you need advice, it can be found at Photos and at How to Post Photos. Otherwise, it looks like you've done some research already, so you're well on your way to finding the answers you want! IP: Logged |

Re Viennese silver box and its maker you might want to check out: Waltraud Neuwirth: Wiener Silber /Viennese Silver 1780-1866, Vienna 1988, Vol.1 deals with boxes only, a famous box maker was Thomas Scheidl, as I look at the picture of his punch it in kind of fuzzy - and might be the one you are looking for. Alternately you could consult a new CD by MAK (Museum Angewandte Kunst, Vienna) Viennese Gold and Silversmiths from 1781 to 1921 and their marks, available from the museum's bookshop. Hope this helps. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Wow, thanks for joining, DB! Your work has proved helpful several times in discussions here (For example, William Van Erp). I know that I've certainly found valuable information in your various articles myself, for my own researches. I'm sure that everyone at SSF will greatly appreciate your input. In the meantime, I still encourage spanielears to find a way to post a photograph or drawing, as well as tell a bit about him- or herself as an introduction. An image is vital, as it is very easy to give the wrong attribution without an example to view, and we wouldn't like to mislead anyone. IP: Logged |
