Over the years I've seen several pieces of jewelry and some holloware that is simply marked "silver". No others marks exist. Am I correct in assuming this was a common mark before the sterling standard was put into place? Any other insights on this particular mark would be appreciated. I no longer own any of these pieces or I would post a photo. I realize how we all like to look at pieces we are discussing. However, this question just concerns the simple word "silver" stamped onto any number of pieces. Thanks! IP: Logged |

The one-word SILVER mark has been used on a lot of jewelry, particularly from Asia. Some older American Indian pieces are also marked that way, and some Mexican -- although more common there is SILVER / MEXICO. It doesn't necessarily precede a sterling or other standard, but reflects work for a market where that standard may not be as important. And in the case of tourist markets, may contribute to a sense of exotic difference, and it also might allow a seller to hawk lower grade pieces as 'silver' allowing the buyer to assume that that means sterling.
