Well, I cannot tell you the maker, but I can help you narrow down the date. According to Tardy, the marking system introduced on 10 May 1838 required that the maker's mark be inscribed in a diamond lozenge, as yours clearly is. The Minerva head with the number 2 under the chin (I cannot see it clearly in your photo) and the shape of the punch in which it is set indicates 800 silver, as you have already determined. The marking system changed again in the mid-twentieth century when assay office letters were added, so that narrows the date of your item down to 1838-1973. Could you provide a picture of the whole piece, which may help some one more knowledgeable on French silver to identify it and allow the rest of us to enjoy it? Good luck, IP: Logged |

I believe this mark to be that of Elisa Egalon, a Parisian jeweler in business at 14 rue Rambuteau, beginning 19 July 1889. I don't know if she is still in business. The diamond shaped device between EE is a "galon" or corporel's insignia, a play on words for the name Egalon. IP: Logged |

Hello Kayvee etc, Glad to see posting by someone who seems to have a handle on post 1838 French maker's marks. I have a number of pieces with the familar diamond lozenge with two initials separated by a device of some sort, but have no access to a listing of the corresponding French makers. Can someone point me to some such cross listing? Merci. IP: Logged |

An excellent source for Parisian makers’ marks 1838-1875 is "Dictionnaire des poinçons de fabricants d’ouvrages d’or et d’argent de Paris et de la Seine, tome II" by Catherine Arminjon and others. This book sadly is out of print but still available on the market for a hefty price. It is listed in SMPub’s list of reference books on silver. Volume 3 in this French government publication series on marks has been awaited for a long time. Until it appears, a complementary source for late 19th C and early 20th C marks is a website maintained by France’s Ministry of Culture www.culture.gouv.fr/public/mistral/marque_fr This site has been mentioned several times in the Forums. It is not particularly user-friendly and some knowledge of French helps when consulting the site because most marks have only a written description. I’ve noticed lately that there has been an effort to add more images of makers’ marks to the site. No single source is comprehensive for 19thC French makers’ marks, and no one reference covers both Parisian and provincial makers. IP: Logged |

I'm sorry Kayvee, but there could be another possibility. Off course a picture of the object would help to date it, but if it is after 1900, the poinçon could stand for Ernest Eschwege: initials E and E with a diamond in between. Although I don't have a picture of the mark, the picture which was sent could be of a diamond. Raf IP: Logged |
