Hi all.

I bought this lovely early David Andersen cigarette case, great enamel on sterling silver, and very cheap.

Great find, lovely piece, you might say.
Until you see the other side!

So, what would it be, every cloud has a silver lining, or, there's always a catch somewhere? However thrilled I am to be able to get hold of a nice piece of Scandinavian enameled silver, to add to my collection, it's always heartbreaking to find such pieces in this condition, no matter how cheap.

Incidentally, does anybody recognize the mark in the middle?

Thanks

Andy

Is it the "S" that is usually in that position? If you tilt your left shoulder it could be a fancy "S" though I am used to seeing only the plain "S" marking in that position.

That character is just an "S". It appears this way in conjunction with D-A's old hammer & tongs mark (1888-1925) on much of the firm's product.

Thanks.
Would it pertain to any specific Designer?

Practically all Norwegian and Danish silver that is marked with a numeric fineness is also marked with an S for silver. So you see pieces stamped 925S, 830S, 826S. Even pieces that are merely stamped 925S, for example, with no other identifying marks can be fairly reliably attributed to a Scandinavian origin.

No, as Paul said it only means it is made of silver.
