Hi there folks. It has been a while since I have posted, more because I was uncomfortable about my photo posting abilities, since the site I was using ate all my photos, than me not having questions. Well, I am back, if my photos post properly, and I am sure with your help, they will. I attended a wonderful estate sale, 5 weeks ago, of a woman who for 40 years had handled estate sales for other folks. I used to get in line the afternoon before a sale, but not having any preview, and not being as fast as I used to be,(not real fast), I decided to show up later. Well, later tuned out to be 6 hours after the door opened, and I showed up expecting lean pickings. Much to my surprise the silver room was still full (heaven to me), and no one had opened the "Allstate" flat display case with the coin silver in it. Among the silver I rescued from the case was 4 matching 8.5" fiddle handle silver (coin ?) tablespoons, marked on the backs, "M. HOYRIS" over "St. Thomas" (see photo). I have had Nantucket silver before, but never even heard of this. My research has turned up nothing. I would appreciate your help or direction. Thanks as always. Marc

Nice spoons (image address had a typo). Hoyris is a fairly rare Danish surname, which leads me to guess the Virgin Islands, which the Danes used to control, rather than Nantucket. IP: Logged |

Hi William, Could you tell me what the image address typo was, so I do not continue to repeat it. Thanks.. Marc IP: Logged |

You had "stthomas.jpg" and the picture on photobucket is actually "stthomas1.jpg" (Not sure why Scott put the original one back in) IP: Logged |

I would assume the (US) Virgin Islands, too. The mark is not typical of mainland US, but more so of British style colonial marks, perhaps influenced by the neighboring British Virgin Islands. Very nice find, indeed. IP: Logged |

I can only add that there were Hoyris's in the Virgin Islands in the nineteenth century. The name did not survive, at least not intact, past the mid nineteenth century. At some point you may decide that it is worthwhile to contact a museum in Denmark about this smith. Here's a site that could be a start for that purpose: Museums & Art Galleries in Copenhagen IP: Logged |

Hi again William, I now believe that I mislisted this posting in American coin (American VI), when it should have been listed in the European / International section of the forums. My fault. Could you please transfer this posting to the proper forum. Thanks so much, and additional thanks to helping me with my photos. Respectfully, Marc Cutcher IP: Logged |
