Good evening: I have 5 of these cup holders that are made of a lovely silver type metal but with very strange marks on the handle. Does anyone know if these are used for coffee or tea (or hot chocolate) and what kind of liner they would use (porcelain, glass or pottery)? Where does one find these liner replacements? Thank you all in advance for any info you might be able to share...Hilda.

Below is the mark on the handle which is an unknown mark that I cannot find in any of my books or on the internet. Does anyone know what this says and whether it is Russian, Turkish, or ?. Is this silver, silverplate or some other kind of material? The design is very intricate and features what appears to be strawberries and either figs or pears and a magnificent man in a turban on a horse with a similar type sword. The design is pushed out from the inside.

Those are Russian and are called "Podstakannik" which means "Under the glass". They are tea glass holders. Different companies made these and I believe are still producing them today.
The letters that appear to be MHU are the kyrillic letters MNZ which stands for the material they are made of, a copper, nickel and zinc alloy. Some can be found that are silverplated.

Regards,
Pat.

I am amazed and so thankful for the info and quick reply. To me they are just as pretty as silver. Would this be tall glass Ice tea holders and do I buy tall glass (clear or colored glass?) inserts, or is it hot tea and a different kind of glass ie short and heatproof, if you know. Thanks a million. Hilda

You're welcome, glad I could help.
The podstakanniks that I have seen had clear glasses in them. I think this was a hot Russian tea.
If you google podstakannik you will find a lot of them.

Best wishes,
Pat.

Hot tea, and they would not be as tall as iced tea glasses. You can have replacement glass for antique silver things that is missing its glass inserts hand blown by a few specialty glass makers around the world who specialize in that sort of thing but the very high prices for this kind of service tends to limit it to things of remarkable sentimental or commericial value. I think you would likely be much better off talking to some of the bigger stores that specialize in selling modern Russian imports to ask about the exact sizes of the glass inserts that come with their sets of inexpensive tea holders to see if you can just buy a set (holders plus glasses) and then move the glasses from the new set to your slightly older set of holders.
