[26-1296] Hi, I recently bought a spoon which seems to be ancient but I don't know where and when it was made and what it was made for. Unfortunately I didn't manage to post a photo but I hope that my description (please forgive my English!) will be relevant: Thanks for your answers! IP: Logged |

I'm afraid it's really impossible to say anything about this without photos. I can picture possibilities ranging from ancient Roman to the 20th century that would match this description. It's really not that hard to post photos here; you can find instructions on the "How to post photos" page linked above. IP: Logged |

I thought the ET simply meant foreign silver, with no reference to the age of the piece. IP: Logged |

Thanks for help for the photos! I read that the ET mark means, more or less, that the object is under 950/1000 and comes from an auction sale or that it is not new and nobody knows where it comes from. It is not really an importation mark. IP: Logged |

It doesn't appear to me to be "ancient" in the usual sense (i.e., roughly pre-Medieval, typically at least Classical Roman period or earlier). "Not new" in this context means simply that, that the piece is not a newly made piece but is of unknown origin, not necessarily particularly old (I think the presumption is that it is foreign - étranger - since a French piece should be so marked). To me it looks 20th-century, in a simple style that makes one think of very old pieces. I have in the Collections I curate, for example, a couple of Egyptian ivory spoons with a similar form, although not the hexagonal handle or finial. IP: Logged |
