Maker Carl Gustav Hansen, country of origin Sweden. Inscription probably means BGK (initals) 1st Prize 1947. Probably given at a golf or other such tournmanet. IP: Logged |

Karl Gustav Hansen was Danish, believe this piece would be by Swedish maker C.G.Hallberg. Cheryl ;o) [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 02-07-2007).] IP: Logged |

It is the firm of Carl Gustaf Hallberg; he lived 1824-1888, but the firm lasted into the early 1960s. I can't make out the town mark (just to the left of the U); their main office was in Stockholm, but they had others as well. They were one of the largest silver firms in Sweden. This piece was made in 1946 (the U8 code), which fits fine with the 1947 presentation date. Yours looks perhaps a bit heavier than the 1932 CGH 3rd Prize dish that I have, and is in more of a classical style. IP: Logged |

FWG..thnx and I am pleased to know someone else has one...I keep a "book" on my treasures (most of the info comes from here)...also Dragonfly -- I got confused as my name is Cheryl also -- this one goes into my Mother's Victorian bowfront secretary...nothing tarnishes in there.. ------------------ IP: Logged |

It is a first place trophy/award but unfortunately there is no way to know for sure exactly what it is for unless someone recognizes it. Often there is a clue as to the contest or sport as part of the engraving or even in the styling of the object that is the award but the best clue on this one is the three letters. My guess is these may be the initials of the organization (garden club, bridge club, sporting club, poetry writing society, etc., etc.) that gave the award, or they could be for the name of the contest, but then again they could also be the initials of the person who won the award. While my mother's family was from Sweden my ability to speak the language is almost non-existant. Anyway, one possibility is the B.G.K. might stand for Bangolfklubb but that is just a wild guess. Bangolfklubb translates more or less as miniature golfing association. Maybe some others who visit this forum who know more Swedish than I do can come up with some other ideas. I once found a silver plated award from the 1930s that was made in Germany in the bottom of a box lot of silver I bought at an auction that was engraved for third prize in hand grenade throwing! One never knows. IP: Logged |
