Inspired by Hose_dk's story of his "silverplate" treasures, I will post one of mine. One of my favorite sets of flatware is Austrian, with a great crowned monogram on the back of the handles of all pieces except the knives; those have it on the front. The crowned monogram is what makes it for me. I know the pattern is pretty common. I got it at a higher-end antique shop on the other side of town, but paid "junk-box" prices for most of it. The dealer had put all of it except for demitasse spoons in with common silver-plated pieces in a basket. I thank the members of this forum for their expertise, since because of you that little Diana mark rang a bell, and I didn't pass them up. Also, thanks to you, I know that the A in that mark means it was made in Vienna. My friend tried to talk me out of getting the knives, as they looked so bad, particularly the blades, but I ended up with a nice little service for six, with knives, forks, soup spoons and demitasse, once I convinced myself to pay what the dealer wanted for them. She had the demitasse priced separately as a set, and I paid more per piece for them. About a year later I was at Scott's in Atlanta, and in a container of teaspoons on a dealer's table, I found six matching teaspoons with the identical monogram! I was so startled by the find, that I blurted out "Where did you get these spoons?" and I'm sure my tone of voice could have been taken to be accusatory. He told me that he got them from dealer so-and-so from the back. I ended up paying him more for the teaspoons than I had for the rest of the set, but still a fair price. When I started down the next row of booths, I ran face-to-face with the dealer I had purchased the bulk of the set from, who was also selling at the show. Mystery solved! The only things I know about the provenance that it was from a New York State estate, and if I remember correctly, there was a enough Judaica (newer stuff) among the items to make me think the owners were Jewish. Does the crown mean that the original owners might have been minor nobility? IP: Logged |

What a find - and in two tempi. Congratulation. As for the crown it has a number of tops. This page in danish but take a looke at the picture. King in top and the lower rang going down. http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangkrone IP: Logged |
