[26-1470] Hello to you all, About this glass holder I've tried to find information first myself. I suppose that this (tea?)glass holder is made in Germany, the mark with the horse can be connected with the German city Stuttgart?.(I'm not sure!) The letter V (old fashioned engraved) is probable the silversmith?.I hope someone can tell me about this silver glass holder. It's nice when you find out, after cleaning a object and you find some marks and be curious and interested for the meaning of these one's. Have they made a lot of these kind of glass holders in this period and in which countries are they made? I saw a few Russian specimen. The 830 s mark they used until around 1920 Thanks a lot Silverhunter. IP: Logged |

Your silver holder has the marks for objects made in Germany after 1888. Perhaps some member of the Forums will be able to tell you the maker, but it is not V. V is a Netherlands mark for objects imported after 1906. Hope this helps a little in your search for information. IP: Logged |

I am not an expert on German marks but this appears to me to be German. Beginning in 1884, all German silver was required to be marked with the half-moon and crown, the silver fineness, and the maker's mark. The 830 mark is the fineness and means the silver is 83% pure which is slightly above the 800 standard which means 80% pure, but below the sterling standard which is 92.5% pure. I do not know the makers marks. By the way this is called a zarf and it is made to hold a glass for hot tea. They have been made for a very long time and there are some makers still producing them. They seem to be most commonly seen in Russia, but they are also easily found having been made by companies throughout continental Europe. IP: Logged |

The manufacturer is Gebrüder Kühn (Kuehn Brothers) of Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, founded in 1860 and still in business.. (Their logo is a rampant unicorn - not a horse - taken from the city arms of Schwäbisch Gmünd.) The Dutch import mark was discontinued in 1953, so that dates your zarf to the first half of the 20th century; my guess would be the 1920's or 30's. IP: Logged |
