Another interesting piece. This elephant with ivory tusks is about 7" long. Any guesses? (The second photo sort of gives it away.) Aside from the German marks for silver and a French import mark it is also marked with an A, a star and a D, all in an oval cartouche. I would think that this is the makers mark but I have no idea who that might be. IP: Logged |

A relatively bizarre drinking vessel (covered cup). IP: Logged |

A creative guess, but I believe it is incorrect. IP: Logged |

Are the feet hollow or at least closed off? IP: Logged |

this won't help much (if at all), but i have had a couple pieces of gold jewelry marked with a very similar mark. i always had assumed they were german (not dragsted as a dealer misinformed me). i never tracked A*D down, but if somebody has a book of german jewelers, that might be a possible avenue of investigation. neat piece. The feet are closed off. Jersey, I believe that you have got it. It's either a spice box or tea caddy. Paul, I have never seen the mark before and I haven't a clue. Maybe it is a jeweler's mark. Anybody have any leads? IP: Logged |

In order to fill or empty it of what ever it contained you would have to pick it up and hold it tail down so as not to spill the contents. Does the head fasten on tightly? IP: Logged |

The head fits snuggly and securely. IP: Logged |

Hello Richard, I'm not sure but the mark may be that of Andreas Daub. Happy to know I guessed correctly. Jersey IP: Logged |

Great find, Jersey! That is definitely the mark that was on my gold jewelry pieces. IP: Logged |

if you use google images to search their mark, you will see there have been many variations of it over the years. IP: Logged |

jersey, Thank you. That appears to be it or close to it. Paul, have you found a version of the mark with a five pointed star that matches the elephant mark? IP: Logged |
