This is a lovely silver ladle that is about 16" long (about 8 oz in wt) that I acquired from an antique mall for my personal collection as I believe it is 18th century Augsburg Silver. It is marked with an E with a cone over it (Augsburg) and a makers mark that I can't ID (please see photos). Could this be the 1741 date and if so, why doesn't it have the zigzag assay mark ususally found on large pieces of silver from this era and location (Augsburg)? Can anyone ID the date and maker. The ?makers mark appears to be a D with something beside it. The Augsburg E is impressed in the applied bowl and on the large handle. It's bowl is heavy gilt and it is a lovely handmade item with a ?rolled lip. Thank you all for your help in advance. (Could that be a bird looking right with it's mouth open for the makers mark?)

Definitely not 1741; the "lancet" style handle is much more in keeping with the early to mid 19th century. The picture is a little fuzzy, but I believe the "E" mark is the one for 1819. The maker's mark has a "D" as the last letter. With the other letter(s) so worn, I wouldn't hazard an attribution, although a member of the large and prolific Drentwett family is a good possibility.

Thank you so much for the infomative reply. This is such a great forum, I always learn something ie "lancet style handle". I always get confused when using Wyler's book of Old Silver and the Augsburg lettering which unfortunately recycles. If it is 1819, is that why there isn't a zigzag assay mark? Do you know when they began doing the zigzag mark and when they stopped, I have never read any comments on that? I will try to research the "Drentwett family", if this is Augsburg, I am assuming they were from Augsburg. This is so lovely and the handle tip is so wide, I am amazed that something of this quality was not monogrammed. Thank you again. Hilda
