[01-1664] I would be grateful to anyone who can tell me anything about this thimble which was part of a lot I bought here in the UK. The maker's marks are intriguing and although I've searched through books I've really drawn a blank. The thimble itself is unusually tall and slender - almost 2.5cm tall. The marks are extremely tiny and very difficult to photograph. Through a magnifying glass the letters inside the diamond shape look like AOV or HOV and there appears to be a line above the O and an inverted crown below it. In anticipation....

Another shot of the thimble with some different lighting. Because the image is very large

Hi, You have a French silver thimble. The diamond shaped mark is a giveaway; all French makers are required to use a mark of this shape. The other mark, though I can't make it out, is almost certainly a standrd mark for small articles like yours. Brent IP: Logged |

Many thanks for your reply, Brent. The other mark looks rather like a head (and shoulders) on its side. Any idea of date? IP: Logged |

Although not terribly clear, I suspect your "head on its side" is in fact a boar's head or "Tête de sanglier, Poinçon employé pour les mêmes ouvrages essayés au touchau (Paris)" This site (in French) explains some of the less common French marks: Poinçons Argent [cgo.com/or/objets/poincons.htm#Poinçons%20Argent - link gone from the Internet] A commercial site specializing in thimbles with a wealth of useful information is Thimbles from Australia and around the world [thimbleselect.bizland.com/catalogue.htm - link gone from the Internet] Although they don't have any French examples at present, similar English examples seem to date to 1890 - 1910.
