[26-1834] About the information about this spoon I can't find the year this spoon was made. The letter M is stamped in the period between the silversmith was productif. The silversmith mark IDS and the key stands for Johan Diederik Sluijter who worked from 1720-1761 in Amsterdam. I still don't have information about early year letter mark from Holland so I hope somebody can give the solution about this silver continental spoon. I don't know if J.D. Sluijter was a son of a silversmith but he worked for a rather long period as silversmith in Amsterdam. I've found a photo of the total mark from the silversmith and send also photo of the spoon. Here in Holland they call it a breilepel.(porridge spoon?).

In Amsterdam, during Sluijter's active period, "M" was used in 1722 and 1746. The shape of the maker's mark on your spoon indicates that 1746 is the correct year; Sluijter's first mark, used ca. 1720-1728, was not so perfectly oval, having a more contoured outline. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Thank you so much Blakstone, like I wrote I just bought this one and they offer a lot of 18th century spoons for a short moment and I just got my first from Amsterdam. There is also one spoon with rat tail (17th century) only one half silvermark and I found that a tricky one but keep on searching and sometimes find a bargain. How is the silver market going in America can you tell me that. Here in Holland there is a growing market right now and even expensive pieces are for sale. But it takes a long time before they sell their products. Half April the second hand market in Delft (just a little town in south-west part of Holland) start selling. There is always a lot of silver to find and a good hunt is starting. America was in the news a lot of hurricanes/tornado's and fire places so I hope that all the members and family relatives are safe. Greetings Silverhunter.(Andre). IP: Logged |
