[26-1848] My husband and I just inherited some silver from his family who immigrated to the US from Norway. I am hoping to learn the maker of this silver coffee service. I know that it was made between 1890 (when this mark started being used) and 1919 (when the family immigrated to NYC). They were from Christiana / Oslo. If anyone has suggestions of how to recognize other identifying marks, that would be great. IP: Logged |

"830" is the silver content - 83% - and "S" stands for "silver". (Well, "sølv", which is Norwegian for "silver".) The little crescent moon is the maker's mark, that of the firm of Thorvald Marthinsen in Tønsberg. The company was founded in 1883 and is still in business. Your dating sound exactly right, as this crescent mark was used only in the first quarter of the 20th century. Welcome to the forum. Please try editing your post to show the full images of your tea set. Posting photos can be a little tricky at first, but you'll soon get the hang of it. A nice set like this deserves to have nice, big images permanently displayed in the post! IP: Logged |
