[26-2049] Hello, I enjoy researching the silver pieces I find and I am usually successful -- but this serving dish has me stumped. I think it might be French silver plate, but I am confused about the diamond shape mark, shouldn't it be square? Interestingly, while researching this piece, I found the answer to an earlier question I posted on this forum (a few years back), concerning some knives that I thought were pewter -- turns out they are French silver by Victor Saglier. Thank you so much for any help with my mystery. IP: Logged |

My goodness, has been years: I've seen French silverplate marks like yours before - it is square, just oriented on point. ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 09-27-2010).] IP: Logged |

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I didn't consider that the mark IS square, just rotated. I'm learning everyday, thank you again! IP: Logged |

The maker is Société Anonyme Argental, registered in 1921. I don't know much about them, except that they were makers of silverplate and gilt metal; I have encountered their their mark (as here) on some pleasant Art Deco designs. IP: Logged |

Thank you Blakstone for the info on the maker! I looked at so many symbols during research and never came up with a match (I examined roosters, eagles, hatchets and crosses until I was cross-eyed, got a headache and gave up). Of course, I would rather do all the above than do the housework that was waiting for me ... Thank you again. IP: Logged |

The symbol is the business end of a halberd ("une hallebarde"): one of those tall, ferocious Medieval pole-axes carried by the Swiss guards and such. Certainly hard to make out unless you're looking for it! IP: Logged |
