According to Sandraline Cederwall and Hal Riney in their book on Spratling Silver, the eagle stamp was first used after World War II. The Mexican government issued the mark to guarantee sterling content. No doubt this was related to the strong demand for Mexican silver jewelry that occurred in the 1940's. Because of the world war, European jewelry sources were cut off, but silver was still available in Mexico with no government restrictions. Penny Morrill and Carole Berk include an EAC hallmark in their list of Mexican silver hallmarks in their book on the subject, but they do not provide any further attribution. Hopefully, someone else out there can provide more insight. IP: Logged |
