[01-0800] I am struggling with a date mark on a very pretty French chalice. I bought Tardy's (forum suggestion!) but STILL can't make out how to read this properly. I assume it is 800 silver but then I am lost. The numbers on the sides of the head are very hard to read but I THINK that it is a 4 in front and a 3 behind. I am also curious about the animal heads at the handles. Does anyone else agree that they are cats?? The maker's mark looks like HS or HB.

Hello Sue, I think your piece is Austrian (pgs 75 and 274 in Tardy's); I made the same mistake with a tazza I once owned. Very pretty! IP: Logged |

Thank you Melissa - you are correct! Now I can see this on the page, I realise that I was in the wrong country altogether. Thank you for that! IP: Logged |
