[01-1278] A friend has given me a silver milk jug and sugar bowl to identify the marks but I'm struggling... There is an image of what looks like a fresh face man or woman, with hair either side of face poking from under a crown with long spiky points, or it could be an Indian head dress? Under the above mark, which is big at 9mm tall, there is a capital "P" "VTA" and what again looks like two towers lying sideways, or they could be daggers? In microscopic lettering, the "crown" has the word "VICTORIA" inscribed on the headband. Any ideas?

The main mark is quite striking, once seen never forgotten, and at 8mm high is BIG. The face with a long multi straight pointed crown. There is no sterling mark. I feel I'm losing you now... IP: Logged |

A very unusual set of marks; they really don't look like anything I have seen before. Are you certain they are silver or silverplate? They actually look like they might be highly polished pewter. Sorry I can't help! Brent IP: Logged |

Only if highly polished pewter looks just like highly polished silver? Both items were cleaned with silver polish and gleam, beforehand they were tarnished. Anyone else? IP: Logged |

This may be a long shot, but could the mark on the right be the Danish two-tower hallmark for silverplate? I can't quite tell from the picture whether or not this is a possibility. IP: Logged |

Dave, in my experience, pewter does look almost identical to silver. In fact, I just brought in a pewter pitcher to clean which I thought was silver until I checked the mark, which reads "Concord Pewter". And yes, it did clean up with silver polish about the same way silver would. People often confuse older silverplate (which has grayed) with pewter, as well. So it could very well be pewter. That's a good possibility that you need to consider in your researches. Unfortunately, I don't have any links to pewter references that could help you and hope if you come across some, you would let us know here. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thankyou all for your replies, I think we may be getting somewhere... I will give the pewter idea further consideration. In reply to Paul, please see my 1st posting - I did suggest it may be two towers. Where might this idea lead? Did the Danes have a thing for Victoria? IP: Logged |

As a follow up, for info. A local jeweller has confirmed the items as silver plate and suggests a commonwealth link with Victoria, perhaps Canadian or Australian. Am resigned to not knowing for sure. Thanks for assistance. IP: Logged |
